Earn the right to participate by being useful and respecting each community’s rules.
Inspect the relevant discussion
If a Reddit page appears in an observed answer, open that discussion and read its context. Which question is it addressing? Is the information current? Are contributors describing direct experience, repeating a claim, or debating a tradeoff? A domain-level citation count cannot answer those questions.
Preserve the exact cited URL and date. Do not assume the same discussion is relevant to every prompt in your category. Treat community posts as evidence to assess, not automatically authoritative product documentation.
Learn before posting
Read the community’s participation and promotion rules. Understand the questions people repeatedly ask and whether a company representative’s contribution is welcome. If the rules prohibit promotion, do not disguise marketing as a customer recommendation.
Use the discussions to improve your own product information. A recurring setup problem can justify a clearer guide. A repeated objection may belong in product planning. You can learn from public questions without turning every thread into an outreach target.
Contribute transparently
When participation is appropriate, disclose your affiliation and answer the actual question. Provide useful detail, admit limits, and link only where it genuinely helps. Do not create fake accounts, endorsements, votes, or testimonials to simulate independent interest.
For an inaccurate factual statement, provide current documentation politely. Separate a factual correction from disagreement with someone’s experience. A user reporting poor support should not be treated as a source error because the company would prefer a favorable description.
Measure the learning and the outcome
Track resolved questions, useful feedback, and relevant referral activity where observable. If a later AI answer cites the discussion, inspect how it represents the information. Do not attribute an unrelated visibility increase to one post without a defensible method.
Community work is a continuing relationship with people. Treating it as a shortcut to assistant citations encourages spam and erodes the independent evidence buyers actually need.
