Read the sources behind an AI recommendation

Move from a list of cited domains to specific pages, supported claims, and actions your team can own.

THE PRACTICAL TAKEAWAY

A cited domain is the start of an investigation, not the conclusion.

Work at page and claim level

A domain leaderboard can tell you where to look, but it rarely tells you what to change. The relevant page might be a review, a product listing, a technical reference, or an old discussion. Open the actual URL and record what it says about the question your customer asked.

Connect each citation to the nearby claim in the answer where possible. Do not assume every link supports the entire response. Mark unclear relationships as unclear. If the destination no longer loads, retain the observed URL and time rather than pretending you inspected its content.

Classify the source’s role

Use a practical taxonomy: owned content, independent editorial, customer reviews, community discussions, directories, merchant pages, and reference material. This is an editorial aid, not a claim about how every engine weights those sources.

Then ask whether the page offers information you can responsibly improve. You can update your own specifications. You can ask a directory to correct an outdated integration. You cannot guarantee an independent publisher will change an opinion or include your product.

  • Record exact URL, domain, question group, observation date, and relevant passage.
  • Distinguish factual errors from unfavorable but supportable judgments.
  • Assign an owner only after identifying a concrete action.

Prioritize repeatable patterns

A page that appears repeatedly on important questions deserves more attention than an isolated citation on a peripheral prompt. Review topic coverage and audience fit alongside frequency. A high-volume source from an unrelated category may offer little value to your buyers.

Use a simple action queue with impact, confidence, effort, and control. An incorrect owned pricing page has a different path from a missing independent review. Keep those actions separate so technical work is not disguised as outreach and outreach is not treated as guaranteed placement.

Check the result at the same question

After an update, repeat the original observation conditions and inspect the answer and source together. Did the page change? Was it retrieved? Did the relevant claim change? A new citation count alone does not answer all three questions.

Keep the original evidence beside the follow-up. Your strongest learning is often specific: this information gap was resolved, while the model’s recommendation remained unchanged. That is still a useful result for the customer and the next experiment.
